Unit 5

Hands up, those of you who have a Facebook or Twitter account. I sure see many hands over there! Facebook and Twitter have is very popular among internet user especially teenagers and youths as a communication tool. They use it to keep in touch with each other and also to post small bits of information about their daily lives and activities. In fact, it has become so popular that you can see people using it in internet cafes, public domain computer stations, schools and even the work place!

Why do people use Facebook and Twitter to communicate over the tradition telephone. mobile phones or even text messages and what benefits do they offer? Well, for one, they are convenient and users can post not only text or audio clips but pictures and videos as well. They can also post links to other websites which they think their friends may find interesting. It is this convergence of voice, video and text that pulls users to utilise it. Compared to telephones which only allows voice to travel through and text messages which allows only text, Facebook allows users to communicate via many other means.

Telephones and landlines require the usage of a cable to transmit voice data between users and may be expensive to install and maintain. Facebook and Twitter can be accessed via mobile phones which do not require a fixed landline and only need a mobile signal for date transmission. In fact, it is also due to this convenient that allows the world to know the situation in Haiti after the earthquake struck and knocked out communication lines. It allowed humanitarian and disaster relief organisations to understand the situation and who or what to send in to aid the survivors and citizens.

However, Facebook and Twitter being forms of Computer Mediated Communication or CMC for short, have their downsides as well. Just like how we leave behind footprints when we walk through a field or snow, CMC users leave behind cyberprints in the cyberworld as well. These cyberprints are traceable and allows companies or even hackers to snoop on user's activities and internet habits. Sensitive information such as credit card details and personal details may also fall in the wrong hands and used for fraudulent and malicious activities like unauthorised purchases. Activities like these are being more and more common that laws have been amended to include these cyber crimes as well.

Another pull factor for CMC is that it allows users to assume a fake identity. In other words, people do not have be themselves and can be anyone they wish to be. A female that you see online in a chatroom or online game may actually be male in real life. Similarly, an introverted and reserve person may turn to CMC for solace as a cyber bully and bully others online or even become a hacker to vent their anger. This anonymity is a double edged sword. It allows people to seek help or even counselling services online anonymously for anything problems they may have ranging from addictions to just needing a listening ear as some people are shy about going to see a counsellor and talking about their problems face to face with a stranger. On the other hand, it also allows dubious characters like hackers to commit cyber crimes under the guise of someone else. In fact, cyber crimes has become so prevalent that authorities have amended laws to make cyber crimes illegal as well.

Despite all the negativity that CMC has brought along with it, it has other plus points as well and there is no doubt that it will continue to dominate and change the way that we communicate with one another as well. Now excuse me while I go and update my Facebook status about this blog entry.

  1. CMC is dangerous in particular becuase of its cyberprint. Since these cyberprints are traceable, hackers can use it to get hold of personal details. They may use these personal details for their own use to be an anonymity. They are able to be someone who they are not and use it to cheat on others.
However I must agree that CMC let us communicate with our friends easily, since it's application like twitter and Facebook can be found in blackberry or Iphone. It enables us to communicate anywhere at anytime. Due to hectic lifestyle in singapore, it's not easy to arrange time for gatherings whereby everyone can make it. So for some that can't, they are still able to view photos on Facebook which is upload by the friends and comment. To get connect and not being forget!

  2. Facebook and twitter haave become social tools in today's world, and they have brought a great deal of convenience to communication. CMC allows fast access of information, which people can connect to one another in a matter of clicks. However, there can be negative effects when one goes to the extreme. There are reported cases such as gamers spending long periods of time gaming without eating or sleeping. They are even willing to forego their social lives (that is, if they have any). It is impossible to get rid of CMC in this technology driven world, but as long as people are able to differentiate between real life and virtual life, we can still prove that we are capable of interaction with others.

  4. OK, I am guilty. I am a Twitter addict and Facebook "stalker" myself. You can get so much information about someone you'd like to know better, or just to find out about what old friends are doing! This is a decrease in privacy and increase in anonymity brought on by CMC.

Leaving carbon footprints is something that is dangerous and must be taken seriously though. Just check out http://failbooking.com and you'll realise that many people actually get into real trouble with their parents, friends and bosses because of Facebook. While it makes communication easier, it also makes it more dangerous!

  5. Not only these sites but through gaming (which more people are spending time on) one can really communicate more with different people in the region and we can exchange cultural views and behavourial actions.

I think cyberstalkers exist because in the first place people wanted to share information yet not to undesired parties. That is why people with probably 3000+ friends on facebook are likely to be stalked or in a worse case scenario haveing their accounts hacked.

  6. i do know people who just refuse to use facebook. facebook might be everything for now but in the future other types of communication will take over and we'll see how facebook will adapt to it.

  8. Definitely, social networks such as Facebook and Twitter would beat landlines when it comes to convenience and practicality. It is efficient and grants for fast-paced feedback from more than a single person.

With such plus points, it is definitely easy for anyone to become heavily reliant on these social networks in the virtual world. And rightfully so, I would dare say; why should we hold back on practicality that would yield a pretty good tradeoff?

The only problem out of all of this addiction on convenience is the lack of the personal form of communication, by means of interacting face to face and having a heart to heart verbal conversation, accompanied by glorious gestures to accentuate the sound of words articulated.

Perhaps we should try to put aside our laptops and mobile phones, and make it a point to meet up with friends for a real form of conversation. We could be pleasantly surprise with how much people may have changed in terms of appearance if we meet them after a long while of virtual interaction.

  9. The cyberspace is still full of uncertainty even though we have come so far. Despite you also not knowing the opposite party in a telephone conversation, one cannot find your identity and your phone number easily without paying a price (like those insurance companies).

On the other hand for CMC, the uncertainty that revolves in the cyberspace discredits its uses. People can just pose as anyone and find you that easily. If you were given a counselling hotline or a counselling chatroom, which one would you choose? The hotline, of course, as it is more reliable as you may not even know if the chatroom is a scam or not.

  10. While facebook and twitter have made for easier communication among friends, there are still dangers lurking out there. Hackers for examples are waiting to prey on unsuspecting web users and steal their details for their own malicious means. Another problem that facebook and twitter brings is that people may be less adept at face to face communication as they spend more time doing so online.

  11. I know! I shall admit that I am using one of those popular social networking accounts. In fact, I own more than one of these things. I do not have a blog, nor do I update my Twitter ever since I created it last year. So it means to say that communication is spreading far and wide just because of the net. Over the net, news come to us, not the other way round anymore. We even see more and more companies/enterprises/government bodies creating one of the social networking accounts to woo citizens to socialize and mingle with them. It is indeed a new way to explore when mass communication is concerned. In 5 years time, Facebook? What is that?

  12. *hands up* I have facebook. Also two twitter accounts. Why do I have so many accounts? Simple. Facebook for updating my relatives who are overseas about my life and how I am doing now. Twitter, one for my friends and colleagues to communicate and share things with me, another for my freelance job.

And yup, it's so convenient that we all are able to upload all kinds of materials online to share. I simply love sharing. But the trouble comes along. There will be a tendency that my personal details may be leaked out and hackers might choose me as a victim to hack.

BUT!!! Who says only social networking sites will expose you to more of these risks? Other sites such as emails sites, online games sites, shopping sites, as long as you have to create an account, there's a risk that your personal details will be leaked.

No matter what online site you are viewing right now, there's a risk. Even messengers that you use to talk to friends. They are bearing a higher risk!!! As an online user, you should already have prepared yourself with all these risks in mind. So not necessary must it be a CMC to put you at a higher risk.

Come to think of it, if there are no facebook, no twitter, no social network sites, or what CMC, how on earth are we going to have more opportunities, be it meeting new people, getting new jobs, learning new things and wasting more time?

  13. Well, Facebook and Twitter is the "IN" thing which everyone is using. Come to think of it, even my mum is using Facebook, and some of her friends are under my friends list as well. Like the original author has stated, there are pros and cons side for all these communication means.

Parents should watch over their children using Facebook, I have stumbled across some images which are not suitable for children of certain images. Some could be violent and others involved nudity contents.

However in the bad points, there are always good things, I found my primary school friends using Facebook and would love to meet up with them soon.

The best part of Facebook, is that you can TAG someone in the photo. We can say that this is consider Picture Sharing, and is much better than the previous CMC which is Friendster.

  14. I'm definitely one of those facebook "stalkers" and twitter addicts that you're talking about lol. I think what makes these sites so popular is how convenient and easy it is to use, especially to keep in contact with friends you barely see in real life. You're right though, about the online footprints we tend to leave. If i ever become a celebrity, I'd better delete off all my online accounts before people find incriminating things about me!

  15. why have facebook? a fake place for pple to interact with each other and a place for pple to show off everything. posting photos and videos and comments, do pple really need so much attention for themselves?

  16. Humans in nature are hideous and vain. That's why there are people who showed off, and some who stalks people. But I do agree the pros far outweigh the cons.

  17. Having quite a number of friends living and studying overseas, Facebook is the perfect way for me to keep in touch with them. I suppose everything will have its pros and cons, and it's only natural that something so progressive such as the Internet will spawn negative effects on the flipside. I guess being informed, and knowing where to draw the line is key.
