Before there was Singapore Idol, there was Talentime, our very own homegrown reality contest where singing talents are sought out, crowned and groomed afterwards. It had a very simple format, the contestants just had to go onto stage, perform a song of their choice and the judges will judge on their performance. That was way back in 2001 and the winner was Cherry Chocolate Candy.
Fast forward to 2004, Singapore Idol was announced and aired over local television. It is a spin off from the Idol series, the most popular being the American Idol. What has started as a small reality television competition to find new solo singing talent has since undergone horizontal expansion and is now a global name with at least 50% of the world having their own versions of Idol contests. Although the original idea started off as a British television series, it has since been popularised by the American spin-off which is American Idol. There is no denying the fact that with the series now showing in many countries, American culture is slowly seeping into their communities and changing their way of life, no matter how small it may seem.
Take Singapore Idol for example, the show's format follows that closely of the American Idol's. There are three judges and at least one of them have a caustic and blunt attitude towards the contestants and gives very "mean" comments on their performances. It seems as though they are trying to fit in a Simon Cowell. Even the types of songs used are mostly American songs. SMSes and phonelines votings are also used for voting for the audiences' favourite contestants. There is no doubt that Singapore Idol has become a large part of our lives especially during the first season when a lot of people tuned in and owing to that, there are a large handful who went on to follow American Idol as well and even keeping track of their winners as well.
If the show is slowly eroding some of our culture and introducing American's, why do people still tune in then? Well, a simple explanation for this would be the uses and gratification theory. What this means is that people follow the series as it represent a potential means of gratification for a basic human need - entertainment. That is right, for entertainment and owing to U.S big brother image, anything that comes from them must be good. It also happens that they are one of the world's largest exporter of media products with many buyers from all over the world.
American culture has inevitably seeped into our culture with most of our media products coming from them or inspired by them such as English language dramas and variety series. Another example would be "Just For Laughs Gags Asia". In the past, we had a similar show called "Gotcha". Most of the English songs and music that we hear are also sang by American artistes and even the usage of American English has slowly crept into our country, much to the dismay of educators because we are still a very strictly British English only country.
There is no denying the fact that U.S.A will continue to be the world's largest exporter of media products for years to come and people all over the world will be influenced by them. Meanwhile, I will continue to stick to my fare of local productions, while awaiting the return of Talentime to replace Singapore Idol and indulging in the occasional foreign media productions.

ReplyDeleteHi :)
ReplyDeleteVariety shows are a place to find talents. Hence, if there are creative ideas coming from other countries, Singapore media will try to use the same idea. Not only that, we are allowed to join in the fun too.
However, over the years, I do observed that there are too many similar variety shows being telecast. We should come up with special ideas.
jiaman^^
The fact that coming out with new innovate ideas and had it to work out cost a lot of money. Thus copying is the easiest and cheapest methods. That's why Mediacorp are buying Asian dramas and American shows.
ReplyDeleteUS culture is dominating because US herself is dominating. Maybe in a few decades time, China will be the dominating one in media exports.
ReplyDeleteSingapore is ever in other big countries' debt by taking their ideas for TV productions. There is a handful of really nice original products but other than that, I think globalization of mass communication has really done a great job. We locals have higher expectations in ourselves as we follow up on the latest trend, popular media and fashion industry with the influential big players like USA or Japan. They have their own styles, why can't we?
ReplyDeleteIt is true that the US has had a strong influence as the world's largest exporter of media programs. Perhaps that is why some asian countries have commented on how "westernized" their citizens have gotten.
ReplyDeleteWe are often exposed to programs from the US, and really good ones I must say. So good that we have local and other asian countries identifying the formula of success and repeating them in a local or asian context.
Yes, you've brought up Talent-time and Singapore Idol. But, I would think that Talent time was first started in the US as well, needless to say for the Idol franchise around the world.
Personally, I feel that it is a two way sort of thing. Our local media knows that most of us have grown to be very "westernized" in our taste for entertainment, and the local media would like to cater to such needs by importing programs from the US to feed us, the viewers. Sure, not all can be generalized to be "westernized" in taste, as evidently seen in a high viewership with local Channel U and Channel 8. But really, how much of the programs screen in such Channels are truly our own? By that, I mean from initial conception to final execution. I find that local variety shows can be so similar to those of Taiwan's that I can't help but question the level of creative input VS. purposefully following a successful formula.
I personally feel that Singaporean media and entertainment industry should be a little more adventurous and creative. We should try to follow lesser imported ideas, western or eastern, and initiate more of our own.
Why do we want to have Singapore Idol in Singapore and not just broadcast American Idol? To get higher ratings. It's that simple. Humans are programmed this way, they will only be interested in certain topics if their own species are involved. That is why we are getting more and more localized programmes nowadays.
ReplyDeleteBut of course, we are indeed some sort of influenced by the US culture. ;)
I feel that the media from all over the world is 'copying' each other. In terms of which variety show has the highest rating for that particular country, then another media will copy and changes some parts to fit the culture of its own country/
ReplyDeleteJust like the american Idol example, Singapore media actually did the same too isn't?
Actually, American Idol is a rip off of Pop Idol, Popstars: the rivals and Britain's got talent and others I can't recall the name of. The first one aired in Britain years before American Idol. Simon Cowell and his company are simply milking all they can from the idea and many of the forerunners of these have now faded away from Britain, only one remains (not counting Britain's got talent). They will fade away altogether before too long.
ReplyDeleteyup the US is indeed influencing the media very much.. one american idol and next many countries are doing it
ReplyDeleteIf US didn't came up with all these programmes, then we won't have much english entertainment. Look at Taiwan and Japan. They have their own set of entertainment programmes that are loved by their people. We should thank those countries that provide us with entertainment.
ReplyDeleteOur very own culture is eroding due to these foreign imports but I must say that US is still key in creating media contents. Just look at their share in the global market, which other country can ever overtake them? They produce the most movies, tv series, games, music, everything!
ReplyDeleteI think we should not be so surprised since Singapore imported almost everything from other countries, and it worked out.
ReplyDeleteSingapore Idol, Talentime, at the end of the day, what the media players want to do is just to get ratings, the more the merrier. I feel that it is not them not wanting to produce local contents but that it is easier to import something else and since US is a ready exporter, why not? Just think of it this way, if you need a cupboard, will you build one on your own or will you get the raw materials and build it on your own?
ReplyDeleteI dislike singapore idol and prefer America idol. it is so much better!!
ReplyDeleteOriginality is almost passé, haha.
